Paolo Rui was born in Milano, Italy on May 4th, 1962
He has been drawing since he can remember, especially flying machines and strange machinery.
First published work: 1978
He got a degree in Painting at Milano¡¦s Brera Academy of Fine Arts (1985).
He was granted a Fulbright scholarship to attend a course of specialization in Illustration at Art Center College of Design - Pasadena, Ca - U.S.A. 1988/89.
Among his instructors were Phil Hays, Jim Heimann, William Maughan and Craig Nelson.
He opened his first studio in Milano in 1990 and started a career as a free-lance editorial and advertising illustrator.
He moved to Taiwan in 1995 to stay with his girlfriend Vicky and lived and worked there until 1999 when they got married and moved to Italy. In 2000 Leo was born.
Now he lives in Milano sharing Studio Sottomarino (Submarine) - with qualified colleagues Chiara Bordoni, Raffaella Ligi, Stefano Misesti and Elena Temporin.

His books have been published and re-published in Taiwan, USA, Korea, Japan, Switzerland, Israel, Brasil and Italy.

Advertising
He has collaborated with some of the most important advertising agencies in Italy and Taiwan.
The list of clients includes Peugeot, Alfa Romeo, FIAT, IBM, NEC, South African Airlines, Panasonic, Dr.Scholl's, Mattel, Clarks, Henkel, Disney, Heineken, Sanpellegrino, Coca Cola, Danone, Gardaland, Speedo, Schweppes, Sony and more.

Animation
He has collaborated with a few advertising companies in Italy and Taiwan in the making of short animations for TV and web, for clients such as Henkel, Bostik and Fubu store.
He uses both traditional and digital techniques.

Exhibitions
Some of his works have been displayed in various exhibitions in Italy, France, Greece, Cuba, Hungary, England, USA and Taiwan.
His first solo exhibition ¡§Woman¡¨ was displayed in January 2008 at the Eslite Bookstore in Taipei ¡V Taiwan. A few of his works are part of private collections and one is included in the collection of the Granatieri di Sardegna Historical Museum in Rome.

Awards
His works have been selected twice for the Bologna Children¡¦s Book Fair 1999-2000, special award for the illustration competition Coop: "150 years¡¦ co-operation" 1995, Best Editorial Illustration Annual 2 - 1995, MEDIASTARS Prize 1996 for best billboard advertising illustration for? NEC, II prrize at the International Illustration Competition Torino City of Culture 2002, Italian Illustration Awards, Annual 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, Junior Library Guild 2009 for his book ¡§Galileo and the Leaning Tower experiment¡¨ Charlesbridge Publishing US, Special mention at the international illustration competition Bimbi Volanti (Flying Kids) 2008.

Techniques
Range from traditional sketching, to acrylic and oil on canvas, but also digital (Painter, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effect, Premiere etc), occasionally mixing techniques.
